Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi

We had visited the GRAND MOSQUE in Abu Dhabi (Not complete yet, but open to visitors and for the prayers) on 8 Jan 2009 with my parents.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque is the third largest mosque in the world, located in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. It is named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan the founder and the first President of the United Arab Emirates, who is also buried there.

A brief introduction of the mosque:

"The mosque has the world's largest carpet at 7,119 square metres from Iran.
The world's largest chandelier from Germany made from one million Swarovski crystals.
It has 28 types of marble and 24-carat gold throughout.
The 22,412 square metre mosque site equates to around the size of five football fields.
More than 3,000 workers and 38 renowned contracting companies took part in the construction work.
The mosque has 82 domes all of traditional Moroccan design - all decorated with white marble.
The main dome's outer shell is 32.8 metres in diameter and stands at a height of 70 metres from the inside and 85 metres from the outside. "

Here you can see some of the pictures that I took.

Playing sand with my kids

Sand play is a great way for child
develop arm and hand motor skills,
explore textures and consistency,
and begin learning concepts like full and empty

It's winter here in Abu Dhabi
with the temperature between 11-20c
(not too hot nor too cold)
we can bring our kids to the beach during weekend
and let them practice scooping and pouring the sand
with some small cups and spoons.

It was fun to see them scooping, pouring,
building sand castle, digging
& bury a few toys in the sand.

We had a wonderful afternoon
seeing our kids indulging in simple pleasures
such as digging up sand with their bare hands.

Saadiyat Island Cultural District Exhibition

We visited the Saadiyat Island Cultural District Exhibition, which was held at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi on 7 Jan 2008. It was an exhibition detailing the Cultural District masterplan for Saadiyat Island opened as part of ongoing plans for a new museum to be built in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Museum. The Cultural District will include a square-mile ensemble of four museums, a five-stage performing arts center, and a biennial park with pavilions for exhibitions and programs, created in collaboration with some of the world’s most prominent art institutions and designed by some of the world’s most renowned architects.
