7D Sri Lanka: The Ravana Ella, Tabbowa Reservoir & Stilt Fishing

The Ravana Ella (Ravana Falls) is one of the most popular sightseeing spots in Sri Lanka.

The famous Ravana Ella cave lies 4500 feet above sea level on the foundation of a cliff in Uva. The grandeur of the Ravana fall is its wild look amidst wilderness. This place is one of the most sought after tourist attractions of Sri Lanka and is located 7 miles away from Bandarawela. The stunning Ravana Ella falls is situated a little more distance away from here and is known to be one of the widest falls of Sri Lanka. The water falling from the Ravana Ella, finds it course down in three stages for 9 meters and then bends itself in a stream. It is believed to originate from the dense Wewatenna highland.

Stilt fishing is a method that is uniquely Sri Lankan and it is primarily centered the region around Galle.

The fisherman sits on a cross bar called a ‘petta’ that is tied to a vertical pole planted in the coral reef.  Sometimes two or more stilts are joined together to form a fence or *wata* so that more than one fisherman can fish at the same time. The fishermen hold the stilt by one hand while seated and fish, with rod and line, in the other hand. They usually sit against the wind.

Stilt fishing has practically been wiped out because of the Tsunami that smashed across East Asia, but the trade has slowly returned. They do not work everyday; especially during monsoon seasons, which starts around April and ends sometime around October or when the weather and water flow are not favorable, then they would usually rest.

7D Sri Lanka: Galle

Date: 13/06/2013

Galle is a small town on the southern tip of Sri Lanka. It is also a bustling town with historic buildings such as the Galle fort.   Galle Fort is a Unesco World Heritage Sight and built in the 17th century by the Portuguese and then later taken over by the Dutch it is a massive, hulking fortress of epic proportion given the time in which it was built. The fortress is so strong that when the 2004 tsunami struck, it emerged relatively unscathed.
