Anuradhapura was the first capital of Sri Lanka in the 4th century BC and it remained that way for hundreds of years. Until the South Indian invasions forced the capital to be relocated it was one of the most prosperous cities in that era. The city itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and well known for its ancient ruins.
Jetavana Stupa
A monastic convoluted in Anuradhapura whose central characteristic. The Jetavana Dagoba or Stupa construct in the 3rd and 4th centuries. It was the 3rd biggest edifice in the world after the two tallest pyramids of Egypt. it is also the world's biggest Buddhist stupa, the world,s biggest ever building made of bricks. The stupa has lost part of its superstructure encompassing its pinna monastery convoluted was founded by monarch mahasena (276-303), the fircle: on its original forms, it had a size of 120 metre. It is reckoned to have been constructed utilising 93 million clay bricks.
It stands on a rectangle terrace, covering over a 3 hectares and 2-4 metres high. the band joined by the lord Buddha is believed to be enshrined here thest of the great builders of containers amidst the rulers of Sir lanka the jetavanaramaya convoluted is approximated to have accommodated up to 3000 monks.
