Apart from being home to millions of bats, the Deer Cave is also famed for its gigantic size and having the 2nd
largest cave passage in the world after Son Doong Cave in Vietnam. The cave also known as Gua Payau or
Gua Rusa by the Penan and Berawan people, is said to have its name after groups of deers who come to the
cave to lick the salt bearing rocks and as a shelter for the animal. Its largest width measure up to 183 metres, depth at 160 metres and its highest peak is 213 metres. Deer cave is also famous for the evening showcase of bat exodus
A 3 kilometer plank walk from Mulu Park Office through the forest to Deer Cave and Lang Cave. It took about 45 minutes to an hour,
depending on your trekking speed through the rainforest of the Mulu
National Park.
